Supporting safer communities in the Humber Region

Friends of Pelican Park, Hull

Pelican Park is a sports facility which offers tennis, football, cricket and netball to the local community. It also runs a weekly youth club. Friends of Pelican Park is a registered charity which runs the activities at the Park. The aim of the charity is to increase participation in sport and learning opportunities in the locality, improve health and well-being, create a community hub for people of all ages and improve volunteering and learning outcomes for young people aged 16-25 years. Pelican Park is a registered Centre Provider to deliver Sport Leader UK accreditation courses. It is also an ADAN registered centre to deliver short courses in Activities and Peer Tutoring, Sports and Fitness, Football Coaching and Disability and Sports Awareness Training.

The Tribune Trust is pleased to be able to support Friends of Pelican Park to run a sports leadership project for local people. The project is aimed at young people aged 16-25 years from the local area. The project consists of a 12 week accredited sports leadership course for up to 25 young people. The course will be advertised in local youth clubs and in local secondary schools. Once participants have passed the course they will be given the opportunity to gain coaching experience at Pelican Park. It is hoped that participants will then go on to find suitable employment in sports leadership and sports coaching in the local area.

The High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire, Mrs Sue Stephenson, is shown presenting a cheque to Jan Hornby, one of the Friends of Pelican Park trustees and to two of the sports coaches, Eve Hunter and Josh Vickers.
