Helping Local Works

05/07/2017

Local Works is a ‘not for profit’ social enterprise based in the East of Hull providing alternative education for young people aged 11 to 16. It is an approved supplier to the local authority of alternative education. Schools use Local Works as a way of building young people’s confidence sending students there for one or two sessions a week and some full time. They may go back into mainstream education or stay for a term or two. All the young people work towards a sports and fitness qualification and they also study English and maths, healthy eating and cooking. Local Works have been very successful in bringing young people back into some form of education and engaging them in learning. To meet demand Local Works developed an extra programme in the evenings. One of the central activities of this provision is the availability of football pitches for 5 a side soccer. Local Works provides staff supervision for the evening sessions. However, the cost of pitch hire is expensive. Local Works made an application to the Tribune Trust and were given a grant of £1440 which will be used to pay for 48 weeks of pitch hire. The High Sheriff visited Local Works to present the cheque and is shown in the picture above with Wayne Anderson from Local Works. Director of the Tribune Trust Paul Cheeseman said "Trustees were impressed with the efforts made by Local Works to engage young people and encourage them to remain in education. They hope this grant will help enhance the alternative provision that is delivered at this centre"
