Frederick Holmes School in Hull is an all age community special school for pupils with severe physical disabilities and those with profound and multiple needs. The school’s pupils are vulnerable and spend their lives having to rely on others to meet their needs. The school is trying to fundraise £5,000 to take eight of their oldest pupils to the Calvert Trust Outward bound centre in Keswick for a week in May. This a centre purpose built and equipped for young people with special needs. The pupils are paying for the cost of their stay. However, the nature of the pupils means they need a lot of support and so it is necessary to take nine staff and hire an adapted bus to take them to and from Keswick. The trip will enable pupils to stretch themselves and build their sense of self as outward bound courses do for people of all abilities. The school undertakes a lot of work to give their pupils the confidence and belief that they have a right to be heard and this trip is the opportunity for their oldest pupils to have a life changing experience before they leave school. The school approached the Tribune Trust which was delighted to make a grant of £1,000 towards the trip. Chair of the Tribune Trust Hugh Bethell is shown presenting the cheque to class teacher Caroline Keam with Head Teacher Barbara Ribey, Chair of Governors Jayne Bickerton, staff and pupils. Hugh Bethell said; 'The Tribune Trust is delighted to sponsor these young people so they have the opportunity to enjoy the unique experience offered by Outward Bound'.
