Hull and East Yorkshire Powerchair Football Team

04/06/2019

Hull and East Yorkshire Powerchair Football Team started in December 2012. It is open to all ages and its aim is to allow wheelchair users to play Power Chair football up to a competitive level. There are 20 registered players who train on a Saturday morning. They have two teams who play at a competitive level. The first team plays in the Muscular Dystrophy UK Championships and the North East Regional League. The Academy team plays in the Yorkshire League and the North East Championships.

Carers, parents and players have built up a small community over time. They socialise together and are able to discuss some of the issues and problems that can be associated with having a disability. Some of the players have been bullied at school and feel vulnerable. By socialising and playing as a team they are able to help and support each other. They are also able to develop their Powerchair footballing skills and participate in a competitive sporting event. This is something that few of the members felt that they would be able to do. They have struggled in the past to find a team sport that they take part in independently.

The Tribune Trust is pleased to be able to support the Club with their Try It camapaign, which they are running throughout 2019. The campaign aims to increase participation in Powerchair football and raise awareness of the sport. Their main ambition is to increase the number of members who can play in their teams and increase the number of people in their Powerchair community.

Mrs Sue Stephenson,The High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire, is shown presenting a cheque to Kai Gill and Luke Brennan who are members of the team.
